Since Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal is heading up for the final release on this April 28, i thought of writing how to upgrade previous versions of Ubuntu to Natty. Here I’m detailing how to upgrade using internet connection and also using a live CD (without internet connection).
Before upgrading I advice you to backup all your important data and documents. First method is using internet connection via Update Manager and most of you might know this method.
Upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 using Update Manager
For this method ensure that you have a stable internet connection. Now take Update Manager from System–> Administration–> Update Manager or by pressing ALT + F2 to open Run and type :
update-manager -d
The Update Manager will show that there is a new Ubuntu release “11.04” available. Now click “Upgrade” – follow the on-screen instructions and wait for upgrade process to complete.
Upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 using Live CD
This method doesn’t require a internet connection. What you need is only a Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal CD. In case if you don’t have the CD you can very well create a bootable USB drive using the built-in Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator or using Unetbootin.
Now boot into the Live CD or pen drive. Choose upgrade Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04. Enter your username and password (what you have for Ubuntu 10.10) when prompted. That’s it.
