Use Data Crow to Create Music and Movie Catalog

When was the last time you searched IMDB to find out the reviews and rating of a movie or did you have to fire up Amazon to buy your favorite DVD. Well the times changed, now you can do all this in one app and it is available for Ubuntu.  To steal some lines from the official site…

“Data Crow is the ultimate media cataloger and media organiser….Data Crow allows you to create a huge database containing all your collected items….You can use the excellent online services to retrieve the information instead of typing all the information yourself…”

It is completely written in Java and runs on less resources. For images and films (or video in general), it is can show information including video resolution, codec, time and more.

I would like to point out some ‘Key Features’:

  • Highly customizable and feature rich.
  • Audio, software, book, movie and photo collection cataloger
  • Retrieves information from services like,, Softpedia and MusicBrainz.
  • Optional internal web server and web GUI.
  • Import file information (mp3, divx, xvid, ..)
  • PDF and HTML reporting.
  • Create new modules to, for example, maintain your stamp collection.
  • Available translations: Italian, German, Dutch, English, Spanish and French

To install in Ubuntu 11.04 / 10.10 / 10.04 / 9.10, you need java installed. If you dont have Java installed, open the terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin

After that just download this . zip file and extract it. Then, inside you will find a file named ‘datacrow.jar’ right click and go to Properties -> Permissions and select ” Allow executing file as program “and close the window. Now again right click on datacrow.jar and clickOpen with Sun Java 6 Runtime ” to run the applications. I found this app very useful.

It is also available for windows, you can download from here.
