How to turn your Ubuntu into a Karaoke Machine

UltraStar Deluxe is an open source karaoke game inspired by the Singstar™ game available on the Playstation®. It allows up to six players to sing along with music using microphones in order to score points, depending on the pitch of the voice and the rythm of singing. UltraStar Deluxe allows you to create and use your own songs, and offer an easy way to manage your song collection.

You can modify its look & feel through themes and skins. You can also extend its game modes via plugins. Though you are not an American Idol you can use this to improve your skills and to have fun. The game goes along with a song and video (or a static image if available) and the target is to sing the correct tones. You don’t need to have a special microphone for this, any model can be used. On the screen you will see a series of bars, each corresponding to a syllable of the song, which will be positioned depending on the note that you must achieve. If you do, the bar will be illuminated completely. During the song there will be some special notes that will earn you extra points

There are two game modes Sing and Party. It is a game worth trying.

To install in Ubuntu 9.10 / 10.04 / 10.10, open terminal and type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tobydox/ultrastardx
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ultrastar-deluxe ultrastar-deluxe-songs

How to add songs?

The easiest way is to install the package ultrastar-deluxe-songs (which is included in the above command). However, you can download more songs from UltraStar fan community. You need to register in order to access their database.wide range of songs, including covers and video clips can be downloaded. Each song consists of a folder containing at least one text file (with the lyrics, tones and beats) and an audio file.

It may also contain a cover image of the album and a video without the audio of the song. Once the songs are downloaded copy it to ~/.ultrastar /songs. If it dose not exist, create the folder /.ultrastar/ songs in your personal folder and try again.

To allow others to make use of songs, copy it to /usr/share/ ultrastar/songs. To do this you will require administrator privileges
