How to install XFCE 4.8 (Xubuntu) in Ubuntu 10.10 / 10.04

Well to start with Xubuntu it is a variant of Ubuntu using XFCE environment. Xfce is a lightweight and aims to be fast and low on system resources with user friendly appearance. Xfce had hit 4.8 a few weeks back. It has done a lot of changes in this version.

What’s New

Here a some of the main changes in XFCE 4.8:

  • Thunar now has the ability to browse remote shares i.e. FTP, Windows Shares, WebDav and SSH servers

  • The Thunar now manages the copy/move operation more efficiently, it displays the operation details in a single box

  • It now gives the user the ability to eject removable disk from the left plane

  • It has redesigned the panel which now has the option to set panel background with non transparent items

  • Another notable change is the new ‘fuzzy’ clock mode

  • The launcher has an integrated application finder to add new items

It has also fixed quite a lot of bugs and errors, which you can read from here.

Installtion

You install it in Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 using PPA. These PPAs have been updated.

To install in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid, open the terminal and paste:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexx2000/xfce
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

To install in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick, open the terminal and paste:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:koshi/xfce-4.8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
